Inception: Gotta Watch It More Than Once
Newsflash update: The music from the 3rd/full trailer of Inception is “Mind Heist” by Zack Hemsey. I thought it was Zimmer too! Gotta admit it, “Mind Heist” is so awesome it overwhelms Zimmer’s soundtrack work!
I’ll get straight to the point. YES – Inception is the movie of the year.
Christopher Nolan can do no wrong! Inception may be a bigger-budget summer blockbuster for Nolan, yet it is so deliciously befuddling, multi-dimensionally compelling & thrilling it may be the most intelligent summer blockbuster you would ever lay your eyes on.

From the moment the first few gorgeous posters appeared to the awesome trailers (& the instantly recognizable Zimmer thumping scores accompanying them), Inception was my 2010 most anticipated movie. & bless Ellen Page’s cute voice for, like The Dark Knight, the immense expectations are surpassed. This is a movie that warrants at least 2 or 3 viewings (I’m in the midst of planning for my 3rd round). Trust me; my 2nd viewing was like a whole new experience.

Inception conceptualizes the idea of a dream within a dream within a dream with limbo somewhere down there, with Leonardo DiCaprio playing Dom Cobb, an extractor who leads a team consisting of a point man, forger, architect & chemist (oh, & a tourist) facing an incredibly complex challenge to perform inception instead. There, one sentence to summarize the movie, you’re not getting any more because you gotta catch the movie. Give me a billion sentences to write & I’d still fail to justify a proper synopsis on the depth & brilliance of Inception.
“You create the world of the dream. We bring the subject into that dream and fill it with their sub-conscious.”
Straight to the good parts. In this growing trend of CGI & 3D mayhem being unleashed, Nolan sticks with realism. Nolan wastes no time & throws you head-long into the thick of the action right from the start. He keeps the audience befuddled but does not insult our intelligence at any point, keeping us captivated enough to remain focused on what’s going on before unleashing the euphoric chaos of the inception mission. This is edge-of-your-seat & blink-&-you-miss-everything stuff man. Some of the action scenes may draw comparisons to The Matrix, but I’m telling you, the zero-gravity section is on a whole new level & has Nolan going gung-ho-all-cylinders-firing. I loved it.
“See dreams, they feel real while we’re in them right? Its only when we wake up then we realize that something was actually strange.”
The ensemble cast is nothing short of spectacular. First of all, Marion Cotillard deserves every single award in the planet for what is one of the most haunting, heart-wrenching, & ultimately outstanding performance as Mal, the dead projected wife of Cobb that appears to scare the shit out of us & mess up everything. Despite having only a small share of screen time, her appearance is the most effective of all. DiCaprio continues his intense-damaged leading role from Shutter Island & is as satisfyingly impressive as ever. Ellen Page is never more lovely & spot-on as Ariadne while Joseph Gordon-Levitt surprises with his delightful serious role as Arthur. Newcomer Tom Hardy provides the suave comic & one-man-show element, rounded up by Nolan’s favourites, Michael Caine & Cillian Murphy. My only grouse would be on Ken Watanabe. Yes, he has the presence & charisma, but his Japanese accent is so thick that I could barely hear what he was saying, & in a movie like this where the dialogue is so pivotal, it is a crucial flaw.

& what’s a great movie without an effective score? My firm favourite, Hans Zimmer, shines yet again, providing some of the most dramatic scores that combines electronic synthesis with an accompanying smaller scaled symphony that makes your heart race to the pace of the scenes. From the Sherlock-Holmes-inspired “Mombassa” to the beautiful “Time”, I have to say this for Zimmer too: he can do no wrong! Note however that I still think Hemsey’s awesome trailer music was so outstanding it puts Zimmer’s work in the shadow.
So finally, I can carry a satisfied smile at this year’s summer, thanks to Nolan. Inception is innovative, smart & respects the intelligence of its audience; it is as challenging & stunning as it is rewarding to us. It’s not as complex as Memento, & Nolan seems to be having more fun with this than The Prestige. Add in an impeccable ensemble cast, an exceptionally stunning performance by Marion Cotillard, & Zimmer’s contribution, & what you get is something more spectacular & mind-blowing than you & I could ever hope for.
& regardless whether you think it was a masterpiece or a pile of messy shit, forgettable is not a word for it – it will definitely keep you talking long after you’ve left the hall. The discussions are endless; I especially like the theories discussed here. Check it out.

KV thinks Hayley & Rihanna brings an extra edge to what are probably the best collaborations of the year with B.o.B. & Eminem. Oh, & Amber Heard is yummy!
